Make gift tags as special as the gift itself by adding a couple of molded pieces. Even the tag is made of polymer clay. A full-size printable pattern and step-by-step directions are provided. There are more images of puppies and kittens on the Dogs and Cats Push Molds page.

  1. Print the pattern pieces and cut them out. Check the FAQ for general Push Molds directions.
  2. Roll conditioned white clay less than 1/8" thick. Holding an X-acto knife perpendicular to the clay, cut one tag back. Use a drinking straw to punch a hold for hanging.
  3. Roll conditioned red (or other color) clay less than 1/8" thick. Cut one heart frame. Place it face down on white paper.
  4. Position the clay back, right side down, on top of heart frame. The frame will extend beyond the back's edges. Press lightly along the edges to fuse the two pieces.
  5. Flip pieces over and place on the paper again with the frame right side up.
  6. Mold one animal head and trim it along the neckline. With a pea-sized ball of clay, mold just the two front paws. The paws should be less than 1/4" thick.
  7. Refer to the image to position the head and paws on the gift tag. Place the clay on paper in a baking pan. Bake according to clay manufacturer's directions. Cool.
  8. Following the techniques in the Painting Tips, paint the animal's eyes and nose with acrylic paints. Painting the fur is optional.
  9. Print "to" and "from" names with a fine-point permanent marker or Prismacolor pencil.
  10. Attach the finished tag to your gift with fine metallic cord.

RosebudAdditional Ideas:

  • Use the Teddy Bear mold instead of the dog or cat.
  • Make tags in other shapes, such as square, circle, diamond, or oval.
  • For a reusable tag, write the names on a removable address label.
  • For a kids' project, cut the pattern pieces out of craft foam.
